Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup raw rice
- 3 3/4 cup water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- pinch of asafoetida
For tempering:
- 1 1/2 tsp gingelly oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp black gram dal
- 1/2 tsp chana dal (optional)
- 1-2 red chillies (pepper powder can be the alternative)
- 1/2 inch ginger (optional)
- 2 sprigs curry leaves
Instructions
- Powder the rice into rava consistency.
- Wash it in water at least twice. Keep it aside.
- Take a deep pan. Add all the items used for tempering.
- Let the mustard seeds sputter.
- Reduce the flame.
- Pour the water into this, add salt, increase the flame and let it boil well.
- Add the washed rice powder into the boiling water.
- Reduce the flame, mix it well and cover it with a lid.
- When it is nearly cooked, add grated coconut to it and mix well.
- The consistency should be such that it can made into balls
- Keep it aside and let it cool.
- Make it into oval shaped balls – the size of an orange.
- Take a steamer. Pour two glasses of water in it.
- Place a deep hollow tray in it and place a cloth or banana leaf on it.
- Place the oval balls into this and cover with a lid.
- Steam on high flame till the water boils and steam appears.
- Reduce the flame and steam for 15 minutes.
- Remove from flame and open the lid.
- Remove the tray from the steamer and let it cool.
- Once cooled slightly, remove from the tray.
- Serve with chutney and sambar.
Notes
- A satisfying healthy breakfast
- Consistency of the powdered rice is key.
- You can increase the quantity of coconut as per taste.
- Some add a dash of coconut oil and mix it in before making into balls.
